The following Notice of Motion signed by Councillor Cr Les Cooper was submitted on 4 December, 2025.
I hereby give notice of my intention to move the following motion at the Council meeting of Tuesday, 9 December, 2025:

That Council endorse the replacement of the current two GIVE WAY signs with C‑size STOP signs and change the line marking accordingly at the intersection of West Street and Sheridan Street, Gundagai. |
Discussion
The intersection of West Street and Sheridan Street is the first point encountered by travellers exiting the Hume Highway into Gundagai from the central access point. It serves as a critical gateway to the town, providing a direct connection between Sheridan Street and the highway while also accommodating local residents who rely on it for access to Nangus Village and North Gundagai. The intersection also marks the commencement of the 40km/h High Pedestrian Activity Area (HPAA) along Sheridan Street, a zone characterised by significant pedestrian activity and surrounded by motels and commercial businesses.
Its dual role as both a visitor entry point and a local connector underscores the importance of ensuring safe and efficient traffic management at this location.
Concerns regarding safety at the intersection have been raised by NSW Police and Councillors on several occasions. The matter was previously considered at the February 2024 meeting of the Local Traffic Committee (LTC), where recommendations were made to improve visibility through the installation of larger signage and the refreshing of line markings. Despite these measures, NSW Police raised further concerns with the Road Safety Officer during a recent community event, leading to the intersection being reconsidered at the November Local Transport Forum (LTF). At that meeting, the Forum recommended that Council undertake a comprehensive audit of signage at the location and provide a detailed report on the findings to committee members at the February 2026 meeting.
Currently, C‑size (highway style) GIVE WAY signs are installed on both approaches from West Street, together with C‑size 40km/h speed signs positioned on either side of the roadway at the approach from the Hume Highway off‑ramp. These signs represent the maximum size recommended for use within urban environments. As signage has already been implemented at the largest permissible scale.
The next option available to Council would be the installation of C‑size STOP signs on the West Street approaches to the intersection. In addition, consideration may be given to the introduction of zig‑zag line markings (normally utilised on approaches to pedestrian crossings), as suggested by NSW Police, to further alert drivers to the intersection and improve compliance.
Financial
Council will assume full financial responsibility for the procurement, installation, and ongoing maintenance of the new signage.
